Death Will Amuse Them
By Kenneth Patchen
A little girl was given a new toy
That needed no winding[1] and would never run down[2]
As even the best of everything will
And all day she played with it
Following happily over the floor of heaven
Until finally it rolled to the feet of God Himself
Who said: "You must give it back now."
Then He pointed down at two soldiers who were staring up[3]
Hopefully
"You see, it is a very popular toy."
And He tossed it down [4]to them
Whose eyes would stare up in earnest[5] when they touched it.
ABOUT SURREALISM IN USA
the movement begins in France just after World War I and has its second flowering in America after World War II.
Kenneth Patchen (December 13, 1911 Niles, Ohio. - January 8, 1972 Palo Alto) was an American poet and novelist. Though[6] he denied any direct connection, Patchen's work and ideas regarding the role of artists paralleled those of the Dadaists, the Beats, and Surrealists.
Patchen's ambitious body of work also foreshadowed[7] literary art-forms ranging from reading poetry to jazz accompaniment to his late experiments with visual poetry (which he called his "picture poems") .
